One of today’s most important environmental problems is the rapid distribution of alien species and the environmental changes that they cause in local ecosystems. Most of these species have been introduced beyond their native habitat via human activities, e.g. they may be imported as ornamental plants or are grown for their fur. Species that are capable of spreading out and surviving in the wild become a threat to native species and are often difficult to control.

The exhibition “Alien Species in the Natural Environment of Latvia” is about alien species in Latvia and how they affect various ecosystems. Species descriptions, photographs, illustrations and the showcased specimens from the Latvian Museum of Natural History collection provide insight into the most common alien species found in both land and aquatic habitats.

Specialists from the Latvian Museum of Natural History have created activities that test visitors’ knowledge on which species are native to Latvia, which are alien, and if so, from which parts of the world they come from.
