While the permanent exhibition “Life in the Seas” is closed for reconstruction, the museum invites you to explore marine topics in the collaborative temporary exhibition “In the Baltic Sea. Photo exhibition “Baltic Deep Sea” and collection specimens of the Latvian National Museum of Natural History”, opened in the exhibition hall on the 1st floor.
The photo exhibition "Baltic Deep Sea" reveals marine wildlife, underwater landscapes and views captured at a depth of more than 25 meters, which might be seen only by marine explorers and professional divers. The exhibition features materials of the archives of the Latvian Institute of Aquatic Ecology, the Scientific Institute "BIOR", Nature Conservation Agency and Mareks Bērziņš.
The specimen of various collections of the Latvian National Museum of Natural History supplement the photographs. For example, the Atlantic salmon, the long-spined bull-rout, the Baltic flounder, invasive species the Chinese mitten crab and others. The fauna of waterfowl wintering on the coast of Latvia in the Baltic Sea is represented by the long-tailed duck, the red-throated loon, the common scoter and the velvet scoter. For those bird species the EU protected habitats – reefs and sandbanks which are slightly covered by sea water all the time – are particularly important as food resources like molluscs, small fish, algae are concentrated there. A special object is the skeleton of a mammal of the dolphin family – the bottlenose dolphin – which was obtained from the dead animal washed up on the coast of Latvia in the spring of 2023 and is displayed for the first time.
The exhibition “In the Baltic Sea. Photo exhibition “Baltic Deep Sea” and collection specimens of the Latvian National Museum of Natural History” is open until December 29, 2024. The reconstructed permanent exhibition will be open to public at the beginning of 2025.
